Raleigh
(sir Walter) (v. 1552 - 1618) courtisan et navigateur anglais. Favori d'élisabeth Ire, il explora la Virginie (1584-1585), d'où il rapporta le tabac et la pomme de terre, puis la Guyane (1595). Disgracié par Jacques Ier (1603), emprisonné jusqu' en 1616, il fut décapité après l'échec de son expédition dans l'Orénoque.
